Dashing off to deliver the first in my seminar series ‘Developing Creativity’ at the University of York this morning. However, I was most disturbed to come across this article in the Daily Mail about the rebranding of ‘super slim’ cigarettes and packaging to appeal to women.
The article says:
‘Tobacco companies have been accused of using ‘increasingly cynical’ marketing ploys to target girls and young women.
In the latest attempt to attract smokers, Silk Cut is launching a range of super-slim cigarettes in packaging that resembles a perfume box.
The move follows similar campaigns in America where women are targeted with female-friendly packaging, often featuring pink colours and floral imagery…
Action on Smoking and Health said Silk Cut’s use of the words ‘super-slim’ was an attempt to make a link between cigarettes and weight loss in the minds of teenage girls desperate to stay slim.’
The article goes on to say:
‘Studies have shown that teenage girls who are concerned about their weight are more likely to take up smoking. Under the age of 15, girls are more likely to smoke than boys.’
I am horrified!
If there is anyone out there – male or female – who is concerned about putting on weight as a result of stopping smoking, please know that there is no conclusive evidence whatsoever to suggest that nicotine is an appetite suppressant. This is just more mythology put about to encourage people to buy cigarettes.
It is a little like the myth that there is a ‘nicotine monster’ inside every smoker that has to be fed on a regular basis. The habits, associations and emotions are all in your mind. Please, please know that smoking does not make you slim (and in most people’s eyes it certainly does not make you ‘elegant’ or ‘attractive’ as these branding companies want you to believe). A well-trained hypnotherapist can help you to ensure that you become a happy, relaxed and healthful non-smoker.
