Hypnosis and the brain

A research study on hypnosis and the brain is featured in this Mirror article today.

Irving Kirsch and his team at the University of Hull showed hypnotised students black and white photos and told them to "see" them in colour.

The article says:

'Scans showed they used the part of the brain actually used in colour vision – so they really were seeing it in their minds.'

I'm not entirely sure that activation of a particular area of the brain is the whole story when it comes to understanding how we 'see something in our minds'. The brain science of perception is very complex.

But this is a very interesting piece of research and I will certainly be tuning in to find out more when it is featured in BBC2's investigation into hypnotherapy in Alternative Therapies next Monday.
