MoonWalk Edinburgh 2007

Moonwalk partyWell, we did it! Verity and I completed the Edinburgh MoonWalk 2007 in 7 hours 5 minutes (official time) or 6 hours 55 minutes, if we count the 10 minutes it took for us to cross the Start line - we started right at the back.

Despite the wind and torrential rain in the lead-up to the event, the big pink tent in The Meadows held fast and 10,000 walkers managed to negotiate the mud.

Biggest challenges: the weather - very cold and wet; the mud; the sleep deprivation; the waves crashing over the sea front at Portobello; the last mile, uphill all the way.

Best moments: dropping down the hill to the Firth of Forth, watching the sky beginning to lighten over the sea; fantastic support from local people hanging out of their windows at various points around the route; crossing the finish line at 7am, to some big and very welcome cheers from stalwart Edinburgh residents.

What an amazing experience and one we will never forget. There was something so very humbling about being part of such a huge group of people, all focused on one crucial goal: to raise money to get rid of breast cancer. We were so incredibly moved by the support from all the marshalls and onlookers who didn't even know us but cared enough about what we were all doing to stay up half the night to cheer us on.moonwalk medals

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us with donations and messages of encouragement by text and email. It really did make a huge difference in those cold, dark hours to know that we had such fantastic support behind us. We met some wonderful people along the way who provided us with further inspiration - including a lovely lady called Catherine whom we met on the train and who told us her own story and gave us a very generous donation; and the walkers carrying photographs of friends and family lost to breast cancer.

Would we do it again? Definitely. A few hot baths and a few early nights and we'll be ready to plan next year's challenge...
