'It was a unique, very personal experience. I am normally a sceptic about these things but it was definitely worth it.'
Alison Wytchwood, Yorkshire Evening Press, July 21, 2007
I am passionate about writing as a way of working through problems, achieving health and happiness, discovering your hidden talents and creativity and feeling good about your life.
You don't have to be an aspiring poet or novelist to enjoy the process of writing. In fact, many people seem to turn instinctively to writing as a way of coping with illness, the loss of a loved one, relationship breakdowns and other problems. People who haven't written since their school days often find themselves writing in the midst of a difficult life experience.
My expertise:
I trained at the University of Sussex in the unique MA programme for Creative Writing and Personal Development, became a member of the teaching faculty on the course and went on to complete my doctoral research there, establishing a cognitive and neuroscientific framework for the use of creative writing techniques in health and well-being. I am particularly interested in writing as a way of exploring our sense of self and finding out who we feel we are, rather than who we think we should or ought to be.
In a world that places increasing importance on exterior appearance and self-image, writing can help us to connect with our inner sense of self - the way that we feel on the inside. It can also help us to express bottled-up emotions by getting them out onto the page.
Writing is central to my own happiness and fulfilment. I am a published poet and I enjoy teaching creative writing at the University of Leeds and running workshops for various groups and organisations.
